Mendon Board of Health defers tobacco violation penalty for Savon Gas owner. Karim Georges, whose store at 147 Hartford Ave East received a first tobacco sales violation and $1,000 fine, demonstrated to the Board that he had retrained staff, modified point-of-sale systems, and redistributed signage since the infraction; the Board unanimously postponed a decision on the length of the tobacco permit suspension until April 8. The Board also directed staff to research data on communities that have banned e-cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches, and to investigate raising the sales age from 21 to 25 or implementing generational sales bans.
In a separate ongoing dispute, Massachusetts DEP noise testing at 5 Harrington Street showed a 5.9-decibel difference between periods when a nearby driving school operated and when it did not, below the 10-decibel state threshold, though resident Cindy Vanslette argued the brief test was insufficient and requested extended monitoring.
