Board of Assessors · Meeting of March 9, 2026
Mendon's Board of Assessors voted unanimously to recommend renewing a means-tested senior property tax exemption for three more years on the May 12 Annual Town Meeting warrant. Principal Assessor Sherrie Bates reported participation grew from 17 households getting $26,898 in fiscal 2024 to 24 households getting $66,030 in fiscal 2026, an average of $2,751 per household. The program matches 150 percent of the state's senior circuit breaker credit.
Eligibility caps income at $75,000 for single filers, $94,000 for heads of household and $112,000 for joint filers, plus a $250,000 asset limit. The board also backed $18,000 and $25,000 transfers for cyclical inspections and valuation updates, and cited an anticipated school operational override as a reason to extend the relief. One member called the benefit "oodles and oodles of money." The board, voting 3-0 each time, then entered executive session to discuss overvaluation applications.
