Library Trustees Begin Drafting State Aid Reserve Policy
Library · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Mendon library trustees float bucket plan for $102,658 in state aid. The Board of Trustees spent much of Tuesday's meeting sketching a tiered reserve system for the library's accumulated state aid, an amount corrected mid-meeting from a reported $86,000 to $102,658.58 after a $16,000 disbursement was accounted for. Members discussed setting aside a fixed emergency reserve, floated at $50,000 and later around $40,000, before directing remaining funds toward staff training, expanded hours and eventual furnishings for a planned rectory rebuild.
The director reported the library spent $28,845.50 over the past month, including $15,000 in salaries and $13,000 in operations, and disclosed that on-call library assistant Annie Romano has resigned. Trustees also weighed letting Serenity, a coffee shop relocating to Hudson, run pop-up coffee sales at the library, likely structured as a Friends of the Library fundraiser given past restrictions on for-profit vendor events. No final reserve figures were adopted; a trustee was asked to draft a formal policy.
