Board of Health Cuts Landfill Gas Monitoring, Saves $39,000
Board of Health · Meeting of August 14, 2026
Mendon Board of Health accepts permit change cutting landfill gas testing, saves $39,000 a year. Vice Chairman Tom Fichtner was credited with securing the reduction from four gas-monitoring rounds to two; groundwater testing stays at twice yearly pending results from wells installed in December. Health Administrator Jack McLellan said the change "will be a savings of $39,000 from gas monitoring per year." Separately, the board spent over an hour with hauler E.L.
Harvey & Sons reviewing the town's 1,928 trash accounts, including 611 on the senior discount rate, with roughly 122 more residents expected to qualify next year. The hauler's representative warned "there's not enough capacity" statewide for landfill and incinerator disposal. No votes were taken on the trash program, and a Walpole regional contract amendment capping costs at $75,000 was tabled for further review.
