MENDON — The Mendon Board of Health reviewed a draft noise bylaw ahead of an October 27 Special Town Meeting vote and approved a septic upgrade on Ashkins Drive. Health Agent Colleen Strapponi outlined the draft's limits of 55 decibels daytime and 45 decibels nighttime, with fines escalating from a warning to $100 and then $300 for repeat violations within 365 days. Vice-Chairman Tom Fichtner said the board was not formally notified of an October 8 public hearing on the bylaw despite submitting input in May, and asked that the Select Board, police department and Board of Health each keep standing representation in the committee's work.
Resident Bob Ellen said his own sound meter readings have averaged 50 to 60 decibels, with past peaks over 90, "it seems very timely, though, considering the issues we've been having." The board took no vote on the bylaw and set it for its October 28 meeting.
